Puppy Program

Today's gundog owner is busy.  Since the pandemic, we have seen more and more owners with less and less time to get the foundations in for their puppy.  We are working to solve that challenge to get your puppy started off on the right foot.  This is NOT a program to substitute the initial bonding with your, but one to supplement and build a solid foundation to build upon.

Gundog Intro Program

You've done the work to build that foundational bonding and obedience work.  Now it's time to awaken the inner bird dog in your your companion.  This is the program to further strengthen the foundation with either an introduction or continuation of the agility course for focus, problem solving and trust.  Getting your pup to coming to us, going along with us (heel) and beginning to stand still (whoa) are the basics here.  Then we move to bird introduction and finally introduction of the gun.  Depending upon your pup's progression, we will continue to expose her to pigeons, quail and possibly some early wild bird work.

Intermediate Gundog

Intermediate Gundog is the program for your dog to work on after their first season afield.  We want the pup to get out and be bold, confident and it's still ok for them to be making mistakes.  We continue to use pigeons and quail on our gamebird preserve to put your pup into positions to grow in its knowledge of working birds and problem solving.  Continued use of the e-collar (if desired) is reinforced in a manner that is not a crutch but a reinforcement in the pup's development.  Exposure to some wild birds will also be done.

Wild Bird Training

Our wild bird program is unique due to living in the heart of grouse and woodcock habitat.  It is also a highly individualistic program tailored to each dog and the desires of the owner.  It is a program for almost any dog, but should be overlaid with other work to build and reinforce confidence, boldness and steadiness.  This program is 75-100% on wild birds.  Many times we may be working on the preserve at the kennel with some quail and pigeons but only in circumstances that are similar to wild bird hunting and with strong flyers.

Here's what you can expect depending on the development stage of your pup:

Young Grouse Pup (prior to first season):  Learning to work the habitat in a confident and bold manner.  Beginning to learn with older, experienced dogs the where and how to work grouse and woodcock.  The win here is for the pup to be bold and to start developing a pattern to work the cover.

Intermediate Grouse Dog (after first and/or second season):  This dog has been exposed to the cover and is continuing to learn the intricacies of working grouse and woodcock.  This pup needs to most likely be on more grouse than woodcock to continue to develop into a true grouse cover dog.  Increased focus on steadiness to the degree the client desires it will be focused on.

Advanced Grouse Dog (multiple seasons/preseason tune-up): . This is really for the dog looking to be fully finished and steady through flush, shot and fall.  An evaluation of the dog in an individual manner will be done prior to see the amount of time needed in the training preserve and in the woods.

Client Hunt Experience

The Client Hunt Experience is similar to any of my client guide trips in the Fall. However, the focus here is on you and your dog. It is to teach you about covers and what to look for. It is to work with you to help you work your dog. This can be more than one hunt in a season and is priced on a per day rate. NOTE: Please book this early as my guide calendar is full each eyar and I want to get my gundog clients in.
